Throughout his adult life, Michael served many community organizations: He was an elder in the  Hopewell Presbyterian Church, and the revivor and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 71 Hopewell; He served as a marketing expert on the boards of the SilverBay YMCA of the Adirondacks and StonyPoint Conference Centers, The American Boychoir and Hopewell Planning Board.  He advised the New Church Development committee of the PCUSA and helped to launch Sower's Field a church planting consultancy. He launched many far-reaching social programs such as the Safe Haven program, now national, to curtail baby abandonment, the Communities of LIght project for Womanspace, the Montgomery Healthy Communities program and Active Parenting groups in Montgomery NJ, Noroton CT and Cumberland RI. He was an active member of the Montgomery Rotary.

In the last months of his life, Michael was surrounded by his immediate and extended family, enjoying their company and graciously receiving their care. His three children were nearby, and Michael looked on in delight as they pursued various creative projects in their respective niches of the Philadelphia arts community. The day after he returned home to hospice care, Michael gave his daughter Catherine away during her wedding to Austin Ricketts in our family's living room. Michael loved being alive, was grateful for each moment, and repeated that he felt "held by God" through his last days. He was a man of deep, abiding joy and peace, who finished well.
